The primary interest of GTR members is 1/24-25 plastic models. However other types of automotive models are also included in our meetings, from 1/43 to 1/8 in scale, from resin and aftermarket kits to diecast collectaibles, even some slot racing cars. But we stress building over collecting, sharing techniques over the speculative aspect of the hobby.

Our purpose is to gather to share our enthusiasm for the hobby in a friendly, non-competitive atmosphere. GTR is based in Northeastern Illinois, with members living mostly in the northwest Chicago suburbs but also coming from the city, the western suburbs and even from southern Wisconsin. We hold monthly meetings, at 7:00 on the third Saturday of each month. Most meetings are at the Fountains of Crystal Lake, a retirement community located about 50 miles northwest of chicago. GTR Dues for 2008 are fifteen dollars.

Meetings feature the sharing of information related to the hobby: news from other clubs, contest and event announcements, new kit releases. There is a "Show and Tell" session where members and guests display and discuss their built models, current projects or newest finds. Often there is discussion of building techniques and tips. Everything is kept on an informal and friendly basis.

GTR also publishes a monthly newsletter for members, other clubs and the model car industry. This features model club news and annoucements, event calendar, meeting minutes, kit and product reviews, and other modeling articles. There is also a PDF version version of the newsletter that goes out via e-mail to anyone interested.

GTR was the 2002-03 IPMS/USA Region 5 Chapter of the Year.

And in 2007 the GTR Newsletter was named IPMS/USA Region 5 Newsletter of the Year
